Commonly compared to American race issues, caste is one of the most difficult subjects for teachers to cover, with seemingly contradictory facts forming a complex picture of an ongoing human rights atrocity. Many Indian families within a recent Uttaranchal census, for instance, were unable to identify their position within the traditionally named “four castes,” but another census revealed that among educated families, caste-based honor killings are more common than interracial and inter-class marriages combined.
